STUDYING IN TIMES OF COVID-19

In dealing with the coronavirus, health protection is the top priority at Brand University of Applied Sciences. Therefore, the consideration of all official regulations and the compliance with safety measures for hygiene protection have top priority.

On this page we inform you about the measures taken at Brand University to protect the health of all students, lecturers and university staff.

In summer semester 2022 teaching at Brand University is conducted in presence. Hybrid and online formats are offered as an option in the current semester.

As of May 2nd, 2022, the mask requirement will no longer apply indoors at Brand University. From then on, it will remain the personal decision of students and lecturers to wear a mask in the corridors and seminar rooms.

Of course, vigilance and precaution are still required in the organisation of the semester. The last year and a half showed that we are also able to react flexibly to all developments and changes in regulatory requirements during the ongoing semester. Within the last two semesters, we have created the necessary infrastructure for successful online and hybrid teaching and gained experience on which we will continue to build and advance the digitalisation of BU.

If you have any questions regarding the semester, please contact our student service:

Enhanced health protection measures apply when visiting the campus:

  • Students, faculty and university staff may only enter the campus if they are free of symptoms and have not had contact with anyone who is acutely ill with Covid-19.
  • Students may attend classes digitally at any time for the duration of a quarantine or if they have symptoms of illness.
  • On campus, signs and walkways must be followed and disinfectants provided should be used.
  • Throughout campus, it is the personal decision of students and faculty to wear FFP2 face masks.
  • The rooms are cleaned and ventilated regularly. In addition, Brand University has a fresh air supply system that balances the CO2 content in the rooms with air from outside. In addition, the seminar rooms are equipped with air filters.

During these times, we will of course advise you in choosing the right course of study and support you in the application process as usual.

Our study advisors are available online and on campus for both consultation and interviews. You can contact them by phone, e-mail, WhatsApp, Microsoft Teams or Skype.

Prospective students who are in Hamburg and would like to visit the Brand University campus can be received personally by prior arrangement, subject to hygiene precautions.

If, due to the current situation at the time of your application, you do not have application documents or cannot obtain them, you can submit them later.

Students are generally allowed to enter Germany.

However, due to the pandemic, there may be longer waiting times when applying for a visa or delays due to travelling from a risk area.

All students who are not yet in Hamburg at the start of the semester can connect to face-to-face seminars in the hybrid format and participate in the virtual lessons.

If you have any questions regarding travelling to Germany, please contact our International Office: korinna.puls@brand-university.de

Brand University has the necessary infrastructure and experience for well-functioning online and hybrid teaching.

In digital teaching, we work with collaborative tools that enable online group work and virtual teaching with a live character. All tools are available to students for free, and all students are provided with a BU email address with full access to Microsoft 365 programmes.

For hybrid teaching, students can connect live to face-to-face seminars and lectures from home and actively participate. For the best possible interaction, each room is equipped with a swivelling monitor, camera and microphone.

Whether face-to-face or online teaching, everyday study was accompanied by digital tools even before the Corona pandemic. We use the e-campus “Moodle” to organise our studies. In addition, our students have access to current literature from over 10,000 books in the e-book library.

“When October 2020 initially started with hybrid teaching, BU was well prepared for the pandemic with hygiene concepts and camera systems in the classrooms.” Tabo Hartog, 2nd semester

“I wouldn’t have thought it, because I was more critical than optimistic about the whole thing, but digital teaching is possible. Of course, the location cannot be replaced, but the ambitions and efforts of the lecturers make it possible to study really pleasantly and also still very seriously and intensively despite the circumstances. I would definitely reject the option of taking a waiting semester to wait for the corona phase to end in order to continue studying on site.” Lea Lindau, 4th semester

“The start of the semester was fine, a lot of new programmes had to be organised for classes. Here, first of all, great respect for the university’s effort!” Alexander Hamlescher, 4th semester

“With modest pride, we can say that the online teaching at the Brand University of Applied Sciences works smoothly in the sense of our teaching concept. For example, we integrated our practice partners into teaching videos and live sessions, and individual student support also takes place in video calls. Via our or public online libraries, our Brand Research Lab or tools such as the Trendexplorer, we can easily access scientific sources in order to continue to work in a well-founded manner.” Prof. Ute Röseler
